"SCRIMSHAW" Scrimshaw or scrimshanding as it is called. Some trace its roots to the whaling fleet of the American north east about 200 years ago when sailors with time of their hands would scratch pictures into whale's teeth or bone and highlight the scratches by rubbing in soot from the oil lamps. This art form all but died out with the end of whaling in the northeast but currently in enjoying a revival as a means of embellishing custom knife handles. When time allows I will sit down and scrim a picture on one of my knives but there never seems to be enough time to do as much scrim as I would like.
